A memorable and meaningful experience was felt by students of Universitas Hayam Wuruk Perbanas as they took part in an environmental care activity by planting trees at the Mangrove Ecotourism Area in Wonorejo Rungkut, Surabaya.

Ericha Grace Lakamola, a student of UHW Perbanas, expressed her joy seeing many of her fellow students participate in the planting of Rhizophora Mucronata mangrove trees. “This experience is something that can be further developed, and I hope what we planted today can be preserved and well-maintained,” said Ericha after the activity on Sunday (June 15).

A similar impression was shared by Naya Azka Putri Winarto, who joined a boat trip to plant trees along the eastern coast of Surabaya. According to her, this was her first time participating in a tree-planting activity. Throughout the event, she gained valuable knowledge and experience on how to care for the environment.

“I hope the plants here, especially in Surabaya, stay lush and cool, and that no one uproots them carelessly,” Naya emphasized.

This green initiative was carried out by UHW Perbanas students as part of the Super Softskills Mentoring (SSM) 2025 program. The event also received support from various partners, including PT SIER Surabaya, KMMB Consulting, and CV Mitra Tuna Mandiri.

Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Collaboration at UHW Perbanas, Dr. Dra. Lindiawati, M.M., explained that the activity was more than just planting trees; it was a part of the university's broader mission to instill long-term ecological awareness in the younger generation. Through the annually held SSM program, the university aims to shape student character and leadership.

“We are educating our students to care—not just about fellow human beings, but also about the environment,” she stated during the event on Sunday (June 15).

She further emphasized the importance of building an environmentally conscious mindset among students. Beyond community impact, Lindi hopes this kind of activity fosters awareness that goes beyond mere symbolism.

“We want to instill the mindset that caring for the environment is not just about planting trees, but also about collective safety. Small habits, like not littering and maintaining order in the classroom, are concrete daily steps of environmental care,” she concluded. (eko/pr)
