Universitas Hayam Wuruk Perbanas has introduced an innovation in developing 3D-printing-based batik stamp molds for the Batik Tulis Melati SMEs in Surabaya. This initiative aims to improve production efficiency without diminishing the artistic value and distinctive character of handcrafted batik.
UHW Perbanas lecturer, Nanang Setiyoko, S.Pd., M.A., stated that the use of 3D printing technology helps accelerate the production process while maintaining the smoothness and precision of the motifs.
“Batik Tulis Melati SMEs have consistently produced high-quality batik works, but their production process remains highly manual, which makes it time-consuming,” he explained after conducting training and mentoring activities for the SMEs in Bubutan, Surabaya, on Thursday (11/6).
Nanang also noted the limitations faced by the SMEs in terms of stamp tools, which are usually made from cardboard or copper, resulting in high production costs and limited durability. Moreover, the batik motifs developed are still relatively limited because each design pattern is created manually.“This situation prompted us to explore opportunities to introduce technological innovations that preserve traditional values while enhancing efficiency and expanding motif variations,” he added.
In addition, the team also provided training on digital batik motif design using graphic software. This effort encourages artisans to develop new motifs inspired by Surabaya’s distinctive flora and fauna to strengthen local identity.
“Our greatest hope is that Batik Tulis Melati SMEs can increase their production capacity without losing their traditional identity, thus strengthening the competitiveness of their products in both local and national markets,” he hoped.
This program has also attracted attention and support from the government through the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) under the 2025 Community Service Program.
The UHW Perbanas Community Service Team includes: Nanang Setiyoko, S.Pd., M.A. (Chair), Thomas Hanandry Dewanto, S.T., M.T., and MY Alief Samboro, S.T., M.Ds. (eko/pr)
